Little Multilingual Minds (LMM): A heritage and foreign language extension program for children
LMM program enhances and extends children’s Heritage Language (HL) input and skills during early childhood and supports families with children learning a second language other than English.
Children learn and develop their language(s) best through play and enriching social activities. LMM works partnering with organisations, such as playgroups, parents groups, early education centres and others, to optimally support children's diverse languages. LMM custom-designs language extension sessions to be delivered by an LMM facilitator either face-to-face, online or a combination of both with our hybrid modality. Therefore, the LMM model is practical and convenient for families, as there is no need to transport children to a new location to participate in LMM language sessions. LMM caters for most languages other than English.
Funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence for the Dynamics of Language and an ARC Future Fellowship to Professor Paola Escudero, research with the LMM program has been approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee at Western Sydney University with Protocol number H11022.
